The Office of the CFO Is Becoming an Agent Battleground
By late 2025, AI in finance was no longer a single product category. Vendors were carving the finance function into jobs that agents could monitor, prepare, recommend or execute.
Oracle announced Payables, Ledger and Planning agents in October. Workday announced finance agents including Financial Close and Cost & Profitability in September. SAP had described Joule agents for finance workflows including cash collection. HighRadius said in February that 186 agentic AI agents were generally available across six product suites spanning receivables, payables, treasury, close and consolidation.
The market is not converging on one “finance copilot.” It is fragmenting into specialized workers.
Four Different Strategies
Oracle's advantage is embedding agents inside a broad ERP/EPM transaction and planning environment. Workday's strategy connects finance agents with the company's wider data and application context. SAP emphasizes cross-functional orchestration, where a finance problem such as a dispute can involve customer service and operations. HighRadius approaches the problem from specialist finance automation, with a large catalogue of narrowly defined agents.
These are not identical products, and counting agents is not a useful proxy for capability.

How to Read the Market Map
Finance buyers should map vendors against five questions: Where does authoritative data live? What actions can the agent actually take? What requires human approval? How is the action audited? How much cross-system context can the agent use safely?
Suite vs Specialist
Suite vendors can reduce integration friction because the agent lives close to the underlying transaction system. Specialist vendors may move faster in a particular finance process and can sometimes work across multiple ERPs.
For many organizations, the eventual architecture may be mixed: ERP-native agents for core transactions, specialist automation for high-value processes and a broader conversational layer for analysis.

The Control Layer May Become the Real Platform
As the number of agents grows, finance will need a way to govern identity, permissions, evidence, approvals and monitoring across them. That suggests a second market may emerge around agent governance itself.
The Signal
The finance software market is shifting from “Which application owns this process?” toward “Which agent is allowed to act on this process, using whose data, under which controls?” That is a deeper architectural change than adding a chatbot to an ERP.
